Pure Wool Nappy Wraps - Why Wool?

Our wool wraps are individually handmade from soft and luxurious new wools including Merino. There are many different varieties of wool because there are more than seventy breeds of sheep. Merino is a breed of sheep recognised by sheep breeders throughout the world as producing the finest fleece which when spun produces fine, soft wool.

Natural & Biodegradeable

Pure wool is a natural high performance fabric which makes highly effective nappy covers. It is also the most natural material you can choose for your nappy wraps. It is kind to the environment and baby, biodegradeable and it comes from a renewable resource. Wool is extremely durable and because of its' natural elasticity it retains its' shape well.

Breathable

Pure wool nappy wraps are completely breathable, they allow air to circulate between the wool fibres creating an insulating effect which means they can be used comfortably in the Summer and Winter. Baby's bottom will be cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

Great for Sensitive Skin and Eczema

It is this same natural breathability that keeps baby's bottom cool and reduces the risk of nappy rash. Wearing wool can also be beneficial to babies with eczema or sensitive skin, it is far less likely to irritate than a synthetic product (see also Lanolin below). The natural breathability of wool means that baby's bottom doesn't get hot which reduces the risk of nappy rash.

Babies Sleep Better with Wool A study in the Lancet concluded that babies were more relaxed when in contact with wool, it had a soothing effect. A number of customers have said that their babies sleep better in their Woollywraps - we can't make any promises but for those of you struggling with restless babies they may help your baby sleep sounder .

Performance

Once Woollywraps have been treated with lanolin they will draw moisture away from baby and absorb it without feeling wet on the outside. When you take the cover off they may feel damp on the inside with a slight smell of urine, when left to air the wee evaporates and they become dry and fresh smelling once again - really they do!!

Wool is absorbent, it can absorb up to 30% of its' own weight in moisture whilst still feeling dry to the touch, so the wool wrap actually adds a layer to whatever nappy baby is wearing. The absorption allows the moisture time to evaporate so the wrap can carry on working at keeping everything but the nappy dry. This process uses up heat and you will find the outside of the covers will feel cooler (as will baby's bottom) than when using synthetic covers.

Lanolin

Lanolin is a natural water proofer, it is the coating that stops sheep from getting sodden in the rain, the wet simply runs off their wool which is naturally full of lanolin, nature is very efficient.

Lanolin got a bad press at one stage, but this was lanolin which had been altered and had synthetic substances added to it, a totally different thing to the Wool Cure we sell to care for Woollywraps which has no perfume or synthetics added. Allergy to pure lanolin is extremely rare as the allergy is usually to the added synthetics not to the lanolin itself as is most often the case when pure substances are altered.

Lanolin is reputed to have healing as well as anti-bacterial properties. One customer whose older child has eczema on his hands has told us that his hands have improved greatly from contact with the Wool Cure - he's now 'Chief Lanoliser' for his baby sister's Woollywraps.
